HOW TO MAKE A RING SMALLER: TIPS & PROFESSIONAL OPTIONS

Whether it’s an heirloom piece, a new purchase, or a sentimental ring that doesn’t quite fit, resizing is a common solution. Rings can slip off or feel uncomfortable when too loose, but fortunately, there are professional services, temporary fixes, and at-home methods to make them smaller. Here’s an in-depth guide to help you find the best option for your needs.

PROFESSIONAL RESIZING OPTIONS

JEWELLER RESIZING PROCESS

Professional jewellers offer the most reliable and permanent resizing solutions. Here’s how the process works:

  •  Cutting and Reshaping. The jeweller cuts a small section from the band to reduce its size. They then carefully solder the ends back together, ensuring a seamless finish.
  •  Reshaping and Polishing. After resizing, the it is reshaped into a perfect circle and polished to remove any visible marks. If it contains stones, they check for security to ensure nothing loosens during the process.

TYPES OF RINGS THAT CAN BE RESIZED

Not all of them are created equal when it comes to resizing. Rings made from gold, silver, or platinum are easier to adjust. Simple designs without intricate patterns or stones around the band are also ideal for resizing.   However, designs with tension settings, delicate engravings, or gemstones along the entire circumference (like eternity ones) require specialized techniques and might not always be adjustable.

COST CONSIDERATIONS AND TIMEFRAME

The cost of resizing depends on the design's complexity and the material. On average, resizing costs range from €30 to €100 for simple bands but can go up to €200 or more for intricate pieces. Most jewellers can change the size of a ring within a few days, but custom work may take longer.

TEMPORARY SOLUTIONS TO MAKE A RING SMALLER

Sometimes, resizing isn’t immediately possible or necessary. Temporary fixes can help in the meantime.   Ring adjusters are small, removable bands or clips that attach to the inside surface, creating a snugger fit. On the other hand, sizing beads are tiny metal balls soldered inside the band by a jeweller.

Pros Cons
 Inexpensive and easily adjustable.
Adjusters can be uncomfortable for prolonged wear.
Perfect for fluctuating finger sizes or temporary needs (e.g., during pregnancy).
Determining the size of the beads, while more permanent, may require a professional jeweller to install.

AT-HOME METHODS

Silicone or Tape Method

This method involves wrapping the band with transparent tape or applying a silicone coating to make it smaller.

 How to Do It:

1. Clean the inside surface.

2. Wrap a layer of clear tape or apply a thin bead of liquid silicone around the inner band.

3. Let the silicone dry completely before wearing it.

Best For: Temporary fixes or costume jewellery.

LIQUID RING ADJUSTERS

They are available online or at jewellery stores, and are a flexible and durable option for shrinking the ring’s fit. These are applied as a gel or liquid and harden into a clear, comfortable layer inside the band.

Durability: Liquid adjusters can last for weeks, making them more reliable than tape.  Avoid using these methods on valuable or sentimental rings, as improper application can cause damage. Always consult a professional jeweller for high-value pieces.

RINGS THAT CANNOT BE RESIZED

While resizing is possible for most rings, some materials and designs pose significant challenges.

Materials That don’t allow for change in size

  • Tungsten and Titanium. These metals are incredibly durable but also too hard to be cut or reshaped.
  •  Stainless Steel. Although strong, resizing stainless steel requires specialized tools, which not all jewelers have.

Designs That don’t allow for change in size

  • Eternity Rings. With stones encircling the entire band, resizing is nearly impossible without compromising the design.
  •  Intricate Patterns. Rings with delicate filigree or engravings can lose their detail during resizing.

Alternative Solutions for Non-Resizable Rings

  • Ring Guards. A small, flexible insert that fits inside the band for a snugger fit.   Custom Replacement. If it is impossible to change the size, consider having a jeweler create a replica of your size.
